DCST Girls Win IL / MO Area State Title
The Kishwaukee YMCA / DeKalb County Swim Team (DCST) won the 2009 IL / MO Area Championship for the second time in three years. DCST finished with 891.5 which outdistanced second place finisher Edwardsville by 52.5 points. The IL / MO Area Championship meet consisted of 55 teams from the entire state of Illinois and the eastern half of Missouri.
One of the DCST coaching staff’s slogans is to “Always swim faster in finals,ý and that is exactly what the team did on Saturday. If the meet was scored after the preliminary session, DCST would have finished in 2nd place by 1/2 a point. However, DCST’s phenomenal performance in the final session changed this half point defecit into a 52.5 point margin of victory.
The final session go off to a great start thanks to the Girls ages 8 and younger 100 yard Medley Relay team of Athena Ye, Elissa Roose, Sarah Hein and Abby Pardridge. The Relay went into finals seeded 5th, but finished 1st by dropping 1.28 seconds from their earlier performance. This was a 12 point increase in the team standings for DCST, and they never looked back. Athena Ye also won the Girls ages 8 and younger 25 yard Backstroke, and she finished 5th in the 25 yard butterfly. Also in the 25 yard butterfly, Hein place 8th. In the Freestyle Relay event the team of Hein, Erin Fidler, Pardridge and Ye earned a 13 place finish.
Not to be out down by Girls ages 8 and younger Medley Relay, in the very next race, the DCST Girls ages 9 – 10 relay of Kylie Olson, Jensen Keck, Alexa Miller and Mikaila DiCostanzo moved up one spot to also be crowned State Champions. In the Freestyle Relay, DiCostanzo, Amanada Cook, Keck and Olson were honored with a 4th place finish. Olson led the way in the individual events in this age group with a 3rd place finished in both the 50 yard Backstroke and 100 yard Individual Medley events. Miller had a strong showing by placing 4th in the 100 yard Freestyle and 5th in both the 50 yard Butterfly and 100 yard Individual Medley events. Keck added a 6th place finish in 50 yard Breaststroke to finish out the top 8 scoring in this age group. Overall in age group scoring for this age group, DCST finished second.
DCST’s highest placing age group was the Girls ages 13 -14 which won their age group. In the Medley Relay event, the team of Tara Gidaszewski, Natalie Carlson, Nicole Pearcy and Molly Olson finished 4th. In the Freestyle Relay, Carlson joined Naomi Cruz, Sharron Isola and Emily Launer to place 5th. Launer had an outstanding meet by winning all three of her individual events, the 100 yard Backstroke, 200 yard Freestyle and 500 yard Freestyle. Isola had a great day by placing 3rd in the 200 yard Individual Medley and 6th in the 100 yard Butterfly. Gidaszewski earned a 4th place finish in the 500 yard Freestyle and two 7th place finishes in the 100 yard Backstroke and 200 yard Individual Medley. In the 200 yard Freestyle and 100 yard Butterfly events, Pearcy earned 7th place finishes.
In age group scoring for the Girls ages 15 – 21 division, DCST placed second. The Freestyle Relay team of Casey Jepsen, Olivia Martin, Kate Taylor and Emily Waller lead the way by finishing 3rd; while in the Medley Relay, Alex Dewitt, Valerie Jones, Katie Hallenbeck and Jessica Lauzon were award 9th place honors. Taylor was DCST highest placing individual in this age group with a 2nd place finish in the 200 yard Freestyle. With a 3rd place in the 200 yard Individual Medley and two 5th place finishes in the 50 and 100 yard Freestyle events, Waller had a very strong meet. Lauzon had big time improvements on the day which earned her a 4th place finish in the 200 yard Freestyle and a 7th place finish in the 500 yard Freestyle. Jones garnered a 4th in both the 500 yard Freestyle and 200 yard Individual Medley events while adding a 6th in the 100 yard Breaststroke. Jepsen swam extremely well with a 4th place finish in the 100 yard Freestyle and an 8th place finish in the 200 yard Freestyle events. With a 6th place finish in both the 200 yard Freestyle and 500 yard Freestyle and a 7th place finish in the 100 yard Butterfly, Hallenbeck had a very productive day.
The Relay team of Emily Cook, Jessica Howland, Theresa Alef and Joelle Maish finished 5th in the Girls ages 11 – 12 200 yard Medley Relay. The Freestyle Relay team of Alef, Cook, Kristina Frohlich and Howland place 12th. In this age group, Maish led the way with two 2nd place finishes in 50 and 200 yard Freestyle events. She also added a fourth place finish in the 50 yard Backstroke. Howland was DCST’s other top 8 finisher in this age group with a 7th place finish in the 200 yard Individual Medley.
